Karel Appel (1921-2006)

Karel Appel (1921-2006) was a Dutch painter, sculptor and poet. In 1948 he co-founded CoBrA (the first letters of the birthplaces of the founders – Copenhagen, Bruxelles and Amsterdam), the avant-garde movement based on spontaneity, experimentation and freedom from tradition.  Appel’s work is characterised by an exuberant, impulsive and almost aggressive manner of applying thick impasto to paper, relishing both colour and material.  He said, ‘I paint like a barbarian in a barbarous age.’

Appel was awarded the UNESCO prize at the 1954 Venice Biennale and in 1960 he was given the Guggenheim International Award. His work can be seen in the world’s major museums of modern art as well as the Karel Appel Foundation.
