12 Nov The Winter Show: London’s Christmas Pop-up Art Exhibition
Modern and contemporary art lovers are invited to The Winter Show, an intimate pop-up art exhibition in the heart of London’s Mayfair during the lead up to Christmas, 6th–20th December 2013.
The renowned antiquarian travel and natural history bookshop Shapero Rare Books will be host to The Winter Show. This fine 5-storey Georgian townhouse provides perfect, elegant counterpoint to a pop-up art exhibition of modern and contemporary art, and visitors to The Winter Show will also be able to browse some of the wonderful antiquarian books, maps, prints & photographs amongst Shapero’s stock, as well as a special collection of Art Deco & Art Nouveau prints and a group of ‘celebrity’ palm prints from the early 20th century. Alongside the vibrant collection of original modern & contemporary art exhibited by Vanessa Clewes Salmon will be the acclaimed acrylics & oil landscapes by Gerry Defries, which includes London’s Hampstead Heath through the seasons, so this promises to be an exceptional show.
For those searching for an original piece of modern and contemporary art to give as a gift this year there will be a tempting array under £500 to suit all tastes and most pockets; particular favourites are Charles Howard’s Nudes at Sea, Heather Bray’s Ragged Island, St Martins, and Julian Christophers’ Redhead Green Eyes.
For many collectors of modern art, a must-see part of the show would surely be Vanessa Clewes Salmon’s offering of Prancing Putti by Andy Warhol. Part of the lithographic set ‘In the Bottom of my Garden’, these early Warhol lithographs form a charming and whimsical group, and at £4,750 for the ones with hand-colouring and £3,750 for the black & white, would make the perfect Christmas gift for those seeking something a bit different by one of the leading exponents of Pop Art, or even an intriguingly aesthetic alternative to stocks & shares perhaps!
Other notable artworks for those with a penchant for the modern and/or contemporary are catered for handsomely by Philip Sutton RA, Sir Terry Frost, Fred Yates, Sandra Blow, Keith Vaughan and John Piper. Cornish Art will also be strongly represented. Although each part of this pop-up art show is very different, together they offer an eclectic, brightly coloured and witty selection of highly decorative, original pieces. A unique viewing experience, especially alongside Shapero’s magnificent antiquarian leather-bound books and prints on a variety of subjects, surely renders this a not-to-be-missed London art experience for this Christmas!
